Deepening Cooperation in Energy and Promoting the Building of a Community with a Shared Future for China and Laos
On April 25, Bounnhang Vorachith, General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President of Laos, met with Xin Baoan, President of State Grid Corporation of China (State Grid). Both parties expressed their wishes to promote the "Belt and Road" Initiative and further deepen cooperation in the energy field, contributing to the building of a community with a shared future for China and Laos.
President Bounnhang expressed thanks to State Grid for its efforts to promote the development of power grids in Laos. He pointed out that Laos and China have continuously enhanced high-level political mutual trust and expanded bilateral relations, reflecting traditional friendship of the two sides and laying a foundation for the development of power industry. With the social and economic development in Laos, the potential to develop power industry across the country is increasing and more opportunities are emerging in grid connectivity with neighboring countries. The construction of the 500kV/230kV power transmission and transformation project in Vientiane, Laos, undertaken by State Grid, has officially started, marking an important progress in Laos-China power cooperation and becoming an important pillar for economic and social development. It is hoped that State Grid and Électricité du Laos will carry out more practical and efficient cooperation across a wider range to better benefit the Lao people.
Xin Baoan thanked Laos for its support to State Grid’s projects and introduced the company’s latest development. He said that State Grid, guided by the "Belt and Road" Initiative, has vigorously implemented its internationalization strategy. Since entering the Laos power market in 2006, the company has actively participated in local transmission and distribution network upgrading. Currently, State Grid is constructing power transmission and transformation projects in Vientiane and northern and southern Laos respectively. After their completion, power grid structure in Laos and power supply capacity in its major load centers such as Vientiane will be improved significantly. In recent years, the Lao government has put forward the “land-linked country” and “enriching Laos with hydropower” strategies. State Grid is willing to give full play to its comprehensive advantages, share the technology and experience of China’s power grid development, support the economic development strategy of Laos, actively participate in the Laos power grid upgrading, promote the implementation of China-Laos power grid interconnection projects, and jointly pursue the "Belt and Road" cooperation.
