Providing Better Comprehensive Energy Services by Internet of Things in Electricity
Facing the new round of energy technology revolution, information and communication technology revolution, as well as industrial integration, State Grid has issued the Comprehensive Energy Service Business Development Action Plan 2019-2020 with the aim to achieve the goal of becoming a world class energy internet company with “three functions and two networks” and to accelerate the development of Internet of Things in Electricity. According to the action plan, it will build an open and cooperative energy service platform to achieve win-win results, develop comprehensive energy efficiency services, multi-energy services for cooling, heating and power supply, distributed clean energy services, tailored electric vehicle services and other businesses, and complete 22 R&D projects on key technological equipment and 20 key demonstration projects, to promote comprehensive energy services and inject new driver for economic and social development.
Big Data for Comprehensive Energy Efficiency Services
With the aim to improve users' energy efficiency and reducing their energy costs and based on the application of Internet of Things in Electricity, State Grid has carried out an in-depth survey on high-voltage energy consumption and changed traditional energy conservation from individual equipment to system and platform.
“The Beichen Business Center Comprehensive Energy Demonstration Project has reached our expectation. Since it was put into operation in May 2017, a total of 2.58 GWh of electricity has been saved, 2,261 tons of carbon dioxide reduced, and the proportion of renewable energy has reached 7.3%, creating an economic benefit of 1.8 million yuan and a comprehensive energy efficiency ratio of 2.38.” said Li Guangxing, Project Manager of the Infrastructure Department of Tianjin Beichen Science and Technology Park Company, on July 1.
The Beichen Business Center Comprehensive Energy Demonstration Project is one of the platform projects connected to State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company’s Energy Data Center. The demonstration project is located in Beichen Economic and Technological Development Zone - the first state-level city-industry integration demonstration zone in Tianjin. Making full use of roofs, parking lots at the Beichen Business Center and adjacent lakes, State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company has built solar photovoltaic facilities, wind power facilities, wind-PV-storage microgrid, ground source heat pump system, and EV charging piles, and integrated them into an intelligent energy service platform of the Energy Big Data Center.
“The intelligent energy service platform enables us to monitor various energy systems in real time, thus achieving intelligent consumption control and smart utilization of energy at the Beichen Business Center. The platform enables automatic energy conservation, realizing interconnection, complementing and optimal dispatching of various energy sources within the park.” said Yang Guochao, a member of the Marketing Department of Tianjin Chengdong Power Supply Company. By the end of June, electricity of 490MWh has been conserved due to the intelligent energy service platform of the Beichen Business Center Comprehensive Energy Demonstration Project.
State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company has connected data with shareholders and third-party platforms through the Energy Big Data Center. It has enabled centralized visual display and data mining analysis of energy flow, business flow and data flow of Tianjin’s electricity, gas, heating and charging networks, from aspects such as energy source, network and load, and provides value-added services to customers, meeting their energy demand.
Leveraging the vast amount of data resources, State Grid Tianjin Electric Power Company will further develop the comprehensive Energy Big Data Center, create a comprehensive energy Big Data operation service base, build an energy data service system covering three levels, and support the government's decision-making , regional energy planning and comprehensive energy efficiency analysis. In addition, State Grid Tianjin will also build a comprehensive energy Big Data collaborative innovation base, a leading urban energy internet laboratory and an urban comprehensive energy metering and evaluation laboratory, to make full use of energy data. Moreover, it will build a comprehensive energy Big Data industrial base and explore the sharing mechanism, and interaction, trading and business model of various energy data, with the aim to establish a sustainable energy Big Data industrial chain, value chain and ecosystem.
In Jiangsu, the comprehensive energy service information platform independently developed by State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company, internally supports the management of comprehensive energy service business, and externally provides customers with integrated solutions such as energy efficiency diagnosis, operation and maintenance services, power replacement, and energy trusteeship. Currently, the platform is serving more than 1,900 enterprises and covers more than 700,000 items of electricity, water and gas monitoring data.
“In November last year, we found through the comprehensive energy service information platform that the boiler system of Jiangsu Province Jian’er kang Medical Dressing Co., Ltd. burned nearly 100 cubic meters of natural gas per ton of steam, greatly exceeding the standard of 75 cubic meters. Therefore, we immediately sent a warning to the enterprise”, said Wang Feng, Deputy Director of the Marketing Planning Department of State Grid Jiangsu Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd.
Upon receiving the warning, Jianerkang Company immediately engaged Jiangsu Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd. to carry out energy efficiency diagnosis with energy conservation solutions. At the beginning of this year, Jianerkang Company upgraded the energy conservation for its water tanks and electromagnetic boilers. In addition, it also enhanced the efficiency of the gas-fired boilers by 10% by increasing the inlet water temperature, thereby saving 120,000 yuan per month.
Moreover, State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company also provided customized services through a comprehensive energy platform.
On December 10, 2018, the first park-level multi-source comprehensive energy service platform in Jiangsu went live at HOdo Group. Through the platform, HOdo Group can get access to the cost and energy consumption of different types of energy in real time, as well as the status of energy utilization in its park, thereby enabling it to formulate an optimal energy utilization program and reduce the overall energy cost.
“Through the platform, we have changed the mode of night energy consumption from least operating cost to optimal operation efficiency, thereby reducing the power generation output of the thermal power plant, ensuring the charging of energy storage stations, and increasing the overall energy efficiency within the park by 51.61%”, said You Jiaming, head of the Project Management Department of Energy Division of HOdo Group in Wuxi.
In addition, the project has contributed profit of 1.5 million yuan to State Grid Jiangsu Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd.
Cooling-heating-power multi-energy service for better energy efficiency
State Grid is committed to promoting efficient energy utilization. It actively meets customer demand for cooling, heating and power supply, and provides them with integrated solutions covering coordinated supply and cascade utilization of various power sources.
As the largest commercial complex in Jinan, Wanhong Plaza has a total built-up area of 270,000 square meters. During the Plaza’s planning, State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company created a customized overall energy solution for the Plaza, which includes the electric boilers, water chillers, photovoltaic power generation, cooling and heat storage system, and comprehensive energy service platform. In October 2018, the Plaza opened, and the comprehensive energy service project was also put into operation.
“Wanhong Plaza had good heating and stable temperature during the heating season last year. Since the beginning of summer this year, the cooling supply has been excellent”, praised Xu Jie, head of Engineering Technology Department at Wanhong Property Company.
The cooling and heating system is capable of cooling and heating storage, not only saving cost for customers but also shaving the peak of power loads. Four 4 MW 10 kV electrode boilers and six water chillers have been installed in Wanhong Plaza, and 3,423 cubic meters of cold and hot water storage pools built, with 112MWh of heating storage capacity, and 8,680 tons of cooling water storage capacity, which is sufficient to meet the Plaza’s heating and cooling demand during peak hours.
“Through the comprehensive energy service platform, we monitor and analyze the Plaza’s energy consumption data. Last year, the heating cost was about 16 yuan per square meter, and now, the current cooling cost is about 20 yuan per square meter, lower than the municipal heating and cooling price. Thus, more than 50% of the cooling and heating costs are cut .” Liu Guanghui said to Xu Jie.
State Grid Shandong Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd. learned from the experience of Wanhong Plaza and developed comprehensive energy service projects covering cooling and heating supply, multi-energy complementation, energy storage and monitoring platform for large buildings and commercial complexes such as Sweco in Jinan and Shandong International Convention and Exhibition Center, and Sanli Plaza in Tai’an, which have achieved good economic and social benefits and established a model for urban green energy utilization.
During summer, Huangcheng Laoma Hot Pot Restaurant located at Chengdu’s second ring road is doing booming business, but the temperature in the restaurant remains at pleasant 26°C degrees which all thanks to the roof-top cooling storage air-conditioning. According to the restaurant, the cooling storage air-conditioning system has led to a 70,000 yuan saving on its electricity bills from June to October per year.
To improve hydropower consumption, State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Company has introduced a new model - “GPUM” electricity trading, which means electricity will be provided to households with a tariff of not more than 0.2 yuan per kWh from June to October each year. State Grid Sichuan Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd. has extensively promoted the electric cooling storage air conditioning project and invited customers to participate in the “GPUM” electricity trading, i.e. to make ice for the cooling storage system during the non-peak hours of the power grid at night, and the stored cooling energy is then released during the peak load period in the daytime. “In this way, peak load can be shifted to fill the valley through consuming hydropower at night, and the power supply can be balanced”, said the head of the Marketing Department of State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Company.
Currently, 49 office buildings, shopping malls, hotels, etc. have been involved in the “GPUM”, with a cooling area of 1.4019 million square meters, consuming a total of 33.176 GWh of hydropower during the non-peak hours, from June to October 2018.
Distributed Clean Energy for“Electricity Replacement”
To promote the consumption of clean energy and boost rural electrification, based on local conditions, State Grid offers integrated services covering distributed clean energy planning design, investment and construction, as well as operation and maintenance.
On July 5, over 10 cargo ships docked at the comprehensive water service area composed of three barges, in the shore power pilot zone of the Three Gorges Dam Area in Yichang. This is the first comprehensive service area on the Yangtze River that integrates safety inspection, shore power service and other considerate services.
One of the three barges is a “green energy ship”, which mainly provides energy for the comprehensive water service area and the docked ships. A long cable supplies electricity to the ship continuously. However, this is not the only power source in the service area. Photovoltaic panels are installed on the top of the three barges, and used to generate electricity.
The barges are equipped with 8 shore power facilities, 16 ship power supplies and 1 environmental testing room. Each shore power facility can supply power to two ships, and the ship power supplies can be directly towed to ships for charging. These 16 power supplies are powered by the photovoltaic panels on the three barges.
“The photovoltaic system is sufficient for daily charging of the 16 ship power supplies. When they stand idle, they can be charged. When any ship is docked, they can be used. Their utilization rate is relatively high. On cloudy days or at night, these power supplies can also be charged through shore power, which is very convenient”, said Li Xingheng, an employee of Yichang Yangtze River Three Gorges Shore Power Operation Service Co., Ltd.
“The comprehensive water service area is a good place for ships to dock. It has convenient shore power facilities and power supplies. With dedicated service staff and easy payment by scanning the QR code, the entire process is very smooth”, said Jiang Jianming enthusiastically, a crew member of Cruise Ship “Royal 21”, who has been sailing for more than 20 years.
While constructing a shore power pilot zone at the Three Gorges Dam Area, a lot of impetus has been placed in exploring photovoltaic power generation and supply. The installed photovoltaic capacity in this zone is 178 kW, which can generate electricity of 150MWh throughout the year and reduce 18,000 tons of emissions.
State Grid Hubei Electric Power Company has taken the shore power pilot zone at the Three Gorges Dam Area as a model to build high-standard power facilities in 10 cities along the Yangtze River. When the conditions are mature, it may act as a shore power producer and participate in power market, thus further establishing a stronger and mutually beneficial energy internet ecosystem with ship owners and port operators.
During the construction of Shandong Rural Electrification Demonstration Counties, State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company promoted distributed clean energy services in rural areas to meet the demand for comprehensive energy consumption, serving the revitalization of rural areas.
The Taitou Town Regional Energy Supply Center Project in Shouguang, Shandong will involve the construction of two 75ton/hour biomass boilers and two 6,000 kW power generating units, which will use vines produced by local greenhouses and biomass resources such as cotton wood, wheat, and corn stalks, to build a regional heat, electricity and steam energy supply station.
State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company has always attached immense importance to the comprehensive energy service market in rural areas, actively promoted distributed clean energy and agricultural electrification, and built numerous demonstration projects, including Shandong Hengyuan Agricultural Photovoltaic Generation Project and Linyi Tobacco Curing House Coal-to-Electricity Project.
To meet the energy demand in rural areas, State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company is further promoting comprehensive energy services in rural areas. It is focusing on implementing efficient biomass utilization, clean heating of multiple energy sources for schools, energy contract management for public buildings, smart home appliance promotion, and customer-side energy service platforms, to create a model for comprehensive energy services in rural areas and revitalize villages.
Efficient EV Charging Service for“Green mobility”
State Gris serves local governments, public transportation providers, taxi companies, online taxi-hailing service providers, logistics and other group customers. It follows closely the EV promotion plans and charging requirements, and provides high-quality and stable EV charging services.
Recently, State Grid Liaoning Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd. and Fushun Public Transport Group signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement on the Construction of Bus Charging Stations in Fushun, to jointly promote the construction of electric bus charging stations. Lu Guoqiang, President of Fushun Public Transportation Group, said: “With the strong support of State Grid, we are confident that new green and environment friendly electric buses will soon provide services for local residents in Fushun.”
With the increase of electric buses, the demand for battery charging is growing. State Grid Liaoning Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd. took the initiative to engage with Fushun Public Transport Group to provide supporting services. It forecast the electricity demand according to the long-term development plan for the city’s bus terminals, and introduced a special short procedure for the installation of the bus charging facilities. In addition, the company also provides real-time monitoring of charging, and guides the bus companies to apply preferential tariff for EV charging and the peak-valley tariff, encouraging customers to adopt the most economical charging time.
For this project, State Grid Liaoning Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd. gave full play to its professional advantages, conducted on-the-spot surveys of the major bus parking lots and bus stops in Fushun, found solutions for inconvenient power supply at some sites, and formulated a targeted design, construction and operation plan of charging piles, to ensure the smooth operation of electric buses.
In March this year, Gaowan, Lishi and Chengdong electric bus charging stations were successfully put into operation, with a total installed capacity of 8,500 kVA, sufficient for charging 180 electric buses simultaneously, which greatly reduced the pressure on Fushun’s public bus lines. According to the agreement, Fushun Power Supply Company will gradually increase the number of charging stations to meet the demand of electric buses, based on the running routes of electric buses.
“Taking the building of Internet of Things in Electricity as an opportunity, we have been developing provincial energy service platforms, enterprise energy efficiency sharing terminals and intelligent energy service systems to tap the market potential with Big Data. By constructing and operating the electric bus charging stations, we will strengthen information integration with infrastructure industries, and create new management and control models and business procedure, thereby effectively enhancing our capabilities in terms of market competition, service and added value”, said Ji Yong, President of State Grid Liaoning Comprehensive Energy Service Co., Ltd.
