Ngari-Central Tibet Interconnection Project Breaks Ground
Forming integrated power network in Tibet, promoting the development and outward transmission of local clean energy
Ngari-Central Tibet Interconnection Project, the power transmission and transformation project with the world's highest altitude to date, has started construction on September 17. It will form an integrated power network in Tibet, ending the long history of separate grid operations in Tibet’s Ngari region.
Imbued by the caring of the CPC Central Committee for the Tibetan people’s livelihood, the Ngari -Central Tibet Interconnection Project is a major step taken by State Grid to implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's important exposition on ensuring stability and prosperity in Tibet. It is also a project conducted by State Grid to implement the spirit of the Sixth National Conference on Work in Tibet.
Once completed, the project will form an integrated power network in Tibet, thus providing power guarantee for China’s overall development strategy and border security. It can meet electricity demands for Tibet’s economic and social development and improvement of people's living standards as well as provide safe and reliable electricity to nearly 380,000 people along the transmission line. The project also enables Tibet's main power grid to cover 74 counties in the region, addressing electricity shortage of 97% of Tibet's population. At the same time, a large electricity channel open to South Asia will be established, which can promote the development and outward transmission of clean energy in Tibet.
The Ngari -Central Tibet Interconnection Project starts at the 220 kV Substation in Duolin, Sangzhuzi District, Shigatse, and ends at the 220 kV Baer Substation in Gar County, Ngari Region, spanning across 10 districts and counties in two cities in Tibet. Its total investment is 7.4 billion yuan and the length of the transmission line is 1,689 km. The project is scheduled to be put into operation in 2021.
It is the most challenging power transmission and transformation project with the world’s highest altitude. The average elevation of the tower is 4,572m and the maximum elevation is 5,357m. The climate along the transmission line is relatively harsh, with the oxygen content of only 50% to 60% of that in the mainland and the average temperature of 0℃ to 5℃. The day-night temperature difference in this region can reach more than 25℃, and the annual effective construction period is only 6 months.
As an important basis for promoting economic and social development, electric power is crucial to safeguarding stable development and energy security, promoting long-term development, and maintaining long-term stability in Tibet. In recent years, State Grid has accelerated the coordinated development of power grids at all levels in Tibet in a comprehensive way and constructed a number of key projects, such as Qinghai-Tibet Interconnection Project, Sichuan-Tibet Interconnection Project, Central Tibet Interconnection Project and a new round of rural power grid upgrading, thoroughly breaking the bottleneck of energy shortage in Tibet. In the future, the company will adhere to principles of safety first and being quality-oriented as always, pay special attention to environmental and ecological protection, and ensure the completion of Ngari -Central Tibet Project on schedule.
