Glorious 70 years, new ambitions today: figures tell the story
Electricity gradually became accessible to Chinese households after the first light bulb was installed in Shanghai in 1882. In particular, since the foundation of People’s Republic of China, electricity has brought forth great joy to our lives over the past seven decades. Moreover, we now enjoy reliable electricity supply, smart meters, efficient electricity service and convenient electric vehicles.
Increased for 617 times, per capita electricity consumption has grown far beyond the world average
The past 70 years have seen profound socio-economic changes in China. As a crucial driver of development, electric power is closely related to all aspects of our lives. Specifically, per capita electricity consumption was a mere 8kWh in 1949 but totaled 4,945 kWh in 2018, a remarkable 617-time increase.
In addition, China has made great achievements in power generation. By the end of 2018, transformation capacity and transmission lines of 35kV and above totaled 6,992 GVA and 1.892 million km, respectively. Total electricity consumption reached 6900.2 TWh, with a per capita figure of 4,945 kWh, far exceeding the global average. Electricity is an active player in all walks of life, injecting new vitality into our lives.
Founded in 2002, State Grid Corporation of China have been continuously developing power grids, providing solid support to rapid socio-economic growth. By 2018, the company has completed 8 AC and 10 DC UHV power transmission projects, forming a strong and smart grid featuring UHV as its backbone and integrated development of power grids at all levels.
Moreover, rural electricity consumption has also soared in recent years, due to State Grid's new efforts in its “Power for all” project and upgrading rural power grids. In 2015, State Grid achieved the target of "Power for all" within its service area, supplying power to 1.371 million people across 347,000 households that used to have no access to electricity. In addition, 485.4 billion yuan was invested into rural power grids between 2016 and 2018, improving power supply facilities and electricity consumption. According to official statistics, in the first three years of the nation's 13th Five-Year Plan, average annual growth rate of rural electricity consumption was two percentage points higher than that of the whole power grid. In 2018, electricity consumption of rural customers accounted for 46% of the total. An additional investment of 147.2 billion yuan will be used to upgrade rural power grids in 2019, so as to meet growing demand for electricity.
Adequate electricity is indeed the powerhouse of more comfortable and convenient lives and a better society.
474 million smart meters are building momentum for smart lives
Since 1949, electric lights, together with electric meters, gained gradual popularity.
Shanghai introduced the policy of “One Meter Per Household” in 1993. Since then, small electric meters, evolving from those imported to those domestically produced, from mechanical to digital, and from simple to smart, all fully reflect the country's socio-economic development.
Nowadays, smart meters have become a more common presence in households. As of 2018, 554 million smart meters have been installed in households nationwide since their full promotion was launched in 2010, of which 474 million have been supplied by State Grid. So far, China has basically realized the full-coverage of smart meters.
Instead of simply recording figures, a smart meter is an important data source for power supply company, providing key information for power failure solutions, power transactions, customer service, distribution and operation as well as quality monitoring. Therefore, the data can be turned into advantages in efforts to develop technologies and equipment for the perception layer of the Internet of Things in Electricity (IOTE), such as a wide area synchronous grid, holographic perception and multi-sensor collaboration ,etc..
Moving forward in leveraging massive data from smart meters, power supply services are more efficient and intelligent, making people’s lives better.
Ranked 14th globally in “getting electricity”
A constantly-upgrading business environment in terms of getting electricity is the power of socio-economic development. To implement decisions made by the central government, State Grid carried out a two-year plan, promoting electricity services for small and micro businesses in Beijing and Shanghai. Consequently, for high and low voltage energy users, procedures of getting electricity are cut to within four and three steps respectively, with average length of time down to 50 and 15 days respectively. This measure has gained great appreciation from customers.
According to the Doing Business 2018 issued by the World Bank, China ranked 14th globally in the “getting electricity” index, a strong contributor to China’s comprehensive ranking in this report.
Meanwhile, in this process, State Grid is active in integrating traditional power business and “Internet+”, so as to build an “online State Grid”, which serves customers digitally rather than physically. Apart from e-shop, e-payment, e-charging and e-PV, this online platform also added a new “5+N” channel, providing diversified service to residences, electric vehicles, stores, enterprises and renewable energy users. A total of 135 online service scenarios have been designed so as to facilitate electricity-related business through mobile phones.
Connecting 311,000 charging piles, Smart Service Platform for Internet of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has been installed for accessible electric vehicle services
An increasing number of customers prefer electric vehicles. It is reported that by the end of 2018, total ownership of renewable energy vehicles in China has reached 2.61 million, of which 2.11 million were battery electric vehicles. Moreover, in the first eight months of this year, the production and sales volumes of renewable energy vehicles were 799,000 and 793,000, respectively, with year-on-year rises of 31.6% and 32.0%, respectively. These growths are highly relevant to upgrading charging infrastructure in China.
In response to government decisions, State Grid has served as an active player in the electric vehicle industry since 2006. So far, it has built a total of 93,700 charging piles and a “10 vertical lines, 10 horizontal lines and two rings” expressway charging network, covering 171 cities in 19 provinces.
Furthermore, State Grid is committed to communicating with its counterparts to achieve more convenient charging services. Notably, its Smart Service Platform for Internet of EVs has been launched since November 30, 2015. As an integrated platform of charging, travelling and energy service, it has connected 1.93 million registers and 311,000 public charging piles, accounting for more than 90% of the total nationwide. It is now the world’s top platform with the widest coverage and largest number of charging piles.
The rapid growth of electric vehicles prompts demand of charging piles and exerts effects on power grid safety. Taking private charging piles as an example, though each one has a capacity of 7kW, rising demand after work hours, which is also the peak of household consumption, pose a potential threat to safety and stable operation of power grids. To solve such problems, orderly charging piles render a favorable choice.
With set quantity and time, these piles can automatically charge during valley hours and switch off with full power, while car owners can enjoy favorable electricity price. In this way, without expansion, transformation or disturbance to power grids, these piles can fully leverage existing power resources and adjust output according to local power load, so as to guide users to charge in an orderly manner and during off-peak periods.
It can be expected that charging services will enjoy greater diversification in the future and electric vehicles will enjoy greater development.
