At the end of 2017, the capacity of renewable energy State Grid integrated was 280GW, showing a yearly increase of 30%, which accounts for 19% of total installed capacity, showing an increase of 3.2%. Furthermore, at the end of 2017 the new installed capacity of wind power and photovoltaic power was 13.44GW and 48.77GW respectively. In twenty provinces and regions, renewable has become the first and second largest energy source. Wind power and solar power generated 377.6 TWh, showing a yearly increase of 37% and which accounted for 7.2% of total power generation. Overall this reflects an increase of 1.7%. Furthermore, renewable energy production in ten of the provinces and districts accounted for over 10% of the amount of consumed electricity.

State Grid seriously implements the policies and measures formulated by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration to promote the development of renewable energy and solve the problem of wind and solar power curtailment. Focusing on power grid construction, dispatch and operations, market transactions, grid-connection services, and technological innovation, State Grid has carried out a lot of work. With the joint efforts of all parties, the trend of discarding wind power and solar power has been effectively curbed. With renewable energy connected to the grid growing by 30%, the solar power curtailment has dropped by 11%, and the wind curtailment has decreased by 5.3%. In the province of Qinghai, State Grid initiated a total of 168 hours of clean energy supply for seven days in a row, creating a new world record and accumulating experience for the operation and consumption of a high percentage of clean energy generation.

In terms of power grid construction, a total investment of 9.5 billion yuan was planned for 750 kV and below of new energy grid-connected and transmission projects, meeting the needs of 5,426 new energy generation projects connecting to the grid and delivering within the province. A number of key transmission projects within provinces have been established to increase the capacity of new energy transmission by more than 5 GW. State Grid timely constructed of photovoltaic power generation bases and photovoltaic leading technology bases to meet the needs of access and delivery. Inter-provincial and inter-regional corridor construction were strengthened, and the “two AC and five DC ” UHV transmission projects were completed, increasing trans-regional transmission capacity more than 50 GW; the inter-provincial transmission project were built, and a batch of 500kV inter-provincial power transmission projects were completed. The construction of six pumped storage power stations, including Yi County in Hebei Province, were start with a total installed capacity of 8.4 GW.

In terms of dispatching and operation, State Grid continued to improve the ability to balance and adjust, built a real-time power balance monitoring platform for the power grid, implemented unified dispatch across the entire network, carried out regional rotation and standby sharing, strengthened inter-provincial power grid peak-sharing and optimized operation control and maintenance arrangements. The incread consumption of new energy is total 18.4 TW. Fully tapping the potential of consumption within the province and promoting the release of thermal power generation plans, the planned electricity in 2017 was reduced by 21% compared with the previous year, and the peak load auxiliary service market was promoted, consuming additional 2.5 TW of new energy. To maximize the use of pumped-storage power stations, the average integrated utilization hours of pumped storage power stations in the service area of the State Grid reached to 2,946 hours.

In terms of market transactions, State Grid actively organized provincial transactions of renewable energy, and achieved inter-provincial transaction volume of renewable energy up to 49.2 TWh, an increase of 36% year-on-year. State Grid carried out cross-regional surplus renewable energy spot trading and completed 5.8 TWh of transactions. State Grid actively promoted the implementation of "two alternatives", and completed the replacement of renewable energy and captive power plant electricity by up to 11.9 TWh, an increase of 25%. State Grad fully built a national-level Beijing Power Trading Platform and twenty seven provincial-level power trading platforms to achieve full coverage of the trading platform and provide technical support for the wide range consumption of renewable energy.

In terms of distributed photovoltaic gridintegration, State Grid further simplified the procedures to fully contribute distributed photovoltaic grid integration service and newlyincreased 539,000 households’ access to electricity and 18.94GW of distributed photovoltaics, an increase of 3.3 times year-on-year. Efforts were made to complete the grid integration service for the poverty alleviation projects, and the total capacity of the national photovoltaic poverty alleviation project was 9.542GW, which benefited 1,515,000 poor households. Assisting in designated poverty alleviation projects, in all 236 poor villages in the “three counties and one district” of Hubei Province, 200kW of photovoltaic-powered poverty alleviation power stations were built in each village, benefiting 97,000 poor people. State Grid built the largest “Technology + Service + Finance” photovoltaic cloud network platform in China, achieving online application and settlement payment of distributed photovoltaic power. State Grid actively supported the construction of new distributed photovoltaic typical demonstration projects such as “Highway Photovoltaic”, “Water Floating Photovoltaic”, “Corridor Photovoltaic”, “Photovoltaic + Water Business”.

In terms of technological innovation, 11 special research projects on renewable energyconsumption were organized and carried out. Based on the research results, a work plan for the promotion of renewable energy consumption was formulated. By dividing labor and implementing responsibilities, the promotion of renewable energy consumption achieved remarkable results. Investment in the research and development of renewable energy technologies reached 612 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 58%. 167 research projects were carried out, including 3 major scientific research projects at the national-level renewable energy field. State Grid accelerated the construction of demonstration projects for renewable energy innovation, put into operation the demonstration project for renewable energy virtual synchronous machines, and approved and started construction of Zhangbei Flexible DC Power Grid pilot demonstration project and Haixi multi-energy complementary integration optimization demonstration project. State Grid has led to the formulation of 17 renewable energy-related technical standards, 14 of which are GB standards and 3 of which are industrial ones. State Grid deepened international cooperation in the field of renewable energy and established normalized exchange and cooperation mechanisms with relevant institutions in countries such as Portugal, Denmark, and Germany.
