| 2008 National Science & Technology Awarding Ceremony Conference was held at the People's Great Hall in Beijing on Jan. 9, 2009. The project of "Flexible AC transmission (TCSC) technology used for transmission system" notified by State Grid Corporation of China won the first prize of National Scientific Advancement Award, indicating that China has reached the state of art level on flexible AC power transmission technology. Another project of SGCC was granted the second prize of National Technology Invention Award and two other projects were granted the second prize of National Scientific Advancement Award.
Flexible AC power transmission technology featured by TCSC represents the developing trend of the most advanced power transmission technology. It employs the advanced electronic and electric means to improve power transmission capacity, and maintain the safety and stability of power grid. Various kinds of grids ranging from 220 KV, 500 KV, 750 KV to UHV can use this technology. The innovation of this project has promoted innovation process and voltage upgrading speed of AC power transmission technology in China. Up to the end of 2008, 33 sets of self-developed TCSC devices have been used in 25 power transmission lines both at home and abroad, with the total capacity above10.87 million MW. The application of this technology has saved investment totaled to 4 billion RMB and reduced more than 3,200 km transmission lines. The market share of this technology has exceeded 50% within its short application period of only four years.
