| After ten years of construction, all the Three Gorges Power Transmission and Power Transformation Project (hereinafter referred to as the Project) authorized by central government are expected to be complete by the end of 2007. Until 2 p.m. on Sept. 7th, 2007, 189.2 TWh power had been transmitted to 11 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities) in Eastern China, Central China and Southern China.
The project started in 1997. By July 31st, 2007, a total of 55 AC power lines had been constructed, of which the actual length of transmission lines in use amounted to 6399 km. And 33 AC power transformation projects with a capacity of 22750 MVA have been put into operation. Three DC power transmission projects were also put into operation, including 3 DC transmission lines with a total length of 2849 km, and 6 DC substations with a transformation capacity of 18000 MW. At present, all projects of primary system have been completed.
The Three Gorges Power Transmission Project is to directly inter-connect Central China grid with Sichuan & Chongqing grid, Central China grid with East China grid, Central China grid with South China grid, and Central China grid with North-east China grid. The Project established a foundation for a nationwide interconnected power grid and achieved optimized allocation of resources between regions. The networking effect has become obvious in transmitting power, shifting peak consumption, hydro and thermal power plants complementation as well as minimizing power reserves.
Over 20 technical innovations and 150 technological improvements were inspired and realized during the construction and operation of the Project.
"The Power Transmission Project must keep in pace with the units installation schedule, thus the power generated by the Three Gorges power plant can be transmitted and distributed in time, and therefore guarantee the power consumption at load center". As the legal entity of the Project, State Grid Corporation of China will be fully responsible for the construction and management of the Project. Currently, every day the Project supplies 260 GWh power generated from Three-Gorges Project.
