Yuheng-Weifang 1,000 kV UHV AC Transmission and Transformation Project Put into Use

At 11:00 am of August 14, the Yuheng-Weifang 1,000 kV UHV AC transmission and transformation project was officially put into use after a successful trial operation for 72 hours. This marks the completion of the four AC UHV projects included in the national Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan.

The Yuheng-Weifang UHV project links the coal-fired power bases in Shaanxi and Shanxi in the west, and Zarud-Qingzhou UHV DC and Ximeng-Shandong UHV AC projects in the east. It is an important part of the North China UHV grid. Leveraging advantages of UHV transmission such as large capacity, long distance, multi-terminals and comprehensive networks, this project will facilitate power transmission of energy bases in Shaanxi and Shanxi, satisfy the increasing capacity of Hebei and Shandong grids, support the UHV DC projects, and improve ecological environment in North China. 

On May 6, 2015, the Yuheng-Weifang UHV project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. It will build three substations in Jinzhong, Shijiazhuang and Weifang and a Switch Station in Yuheng and expand the Jinan substation, adding a 15 GVA transformation capacity to the grid. The transmission line of this project totally runs 2กม1050 km, passing through Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei and Shandong provinces from west to east and spans over the Yellow River twice. With an approved dynamic investment of RMB 24.18 billion, the project is the largest UHV AC project with the longest transmission distance.

The project was commenced on May 12, 2015. With the management mode of "the HQs making overall plans and coordinating, provincial electric power companies taking charge of management on site, and subsidiaries directly managed by the head office offering professional support", all parties joined hands to overcome many difficulties such as low temperature, strong wind and sand storm, frequent rains and strict regulations, and finally completed the project successfully within two years. New breakthroughs were made in the application of new devices and technologies like disintegrating transformer, 9 degree seismic fortification intensity at all stations, switched high resistance circuit breaker and crossing over construction, as well as GIS dust-free installation and eco-friendly construction, further improving the quality of UHV AC projects.

The project began commissioning on May 18, 2017. As of August 5, a total of 36 commissioning items of five categories were completed and the construction and commissioning of expansion projects of Yuheng and Weifang substations also came to an end. On August 11, SGCC held a video conference on the trial operation. Liu Zehong, Executive Vice President of SGCC, attended the meeting and announced that the trial operation would start at 11:00 am.
