Dr. Shu Yinbiao Attended the Symposium of the China-Germany Economic Advisory Committee and Delivered Speech
Working Together to Promote Energy Transition and Joining Hands to Promote the ”°Belt and Road”± Initiative
On May 24, 2018, Premier Li Keqiang and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany attended a symposium of the China-Germany Economic Advisory Committee and talked with business leaders from the two countries. Dr. Shu Yinbiao, Chairman of State Grid and Secretaryof the Party Committee of State Grid, was invited to attend the symposium and delivered a speech on working together to promote energy transition and joining hands to promote the ”°Belt and Road”± Initiative.

Dr. Shu Yinbiao pointed out that under the support of both governments of China and Germany, State Grid has further deepened cooperation with its German counterparts in the past year. To ensure the execution of the Paris Agreement and speed up energy transition, the Chinese government is accelerating an energy production and consumption revolution and the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system. Power grids can serve as a fundamental platform in energy transition. State Grid has grasped comprehensively UHV AC and DC power transmission technologies through independent innovation and is building strong and smart power grids with UHV system as the backbone network, effectively promoting the development of renewable energy in China. By the end of 2017, the installed capacity of wind and solar power in China reached 160GW and 130GW respectively, increasing the renewable energy penetration to 17%. Moreover, State Grid has vigorously taken a green and low-carbon approach to meet the electricity demand. Last year, State Grid had supplied power to Qinghai Province with electricity generated solely from renewable energy for 7 consecutive days. In June 2017, State Grid, VDE, Siemens and other partners jointly organized an international seminar on renewable energy development and technology in Frankfurt to discuss challenges on renewable energy development. In March 2018, State Grid signed MOU with DENA to jointly develop a renewable energy town in Suzhou (Tongli), Jiangsu Province as a showcase of energy transition to the world.

Dr. Shu Yinbiao pointed out that the ”°Belt and Road”± Initiative has unleashed broader markets and cooperative opportunities for energy enterprises from China and Germany. In Brazil, State Grid won the bid of Phase I and Phase II of ”Ą800 kV Belo Monte Hydropower UHV DC Transmission Projects, and purchased from German companies such as Voith and Siemens equipment and services. Phase I of this project was put into commercial operation in December, 2017, while Phase II is expected to operate in 2019. In China, State Grid has been actively introducing advanced technologies and quality equipment from Germany, which have been extensively used in power grid construction. Dr. Shu Yinbiao expressed his wish that in the next step, underpinned by the ”°Belt and Road”± Initiative, State Grid will strengthen the cooperation with German companies to jointly develop third-party markets.

China and Germany are important partners to each other with huge development potential. Dr. Shu Yinbiao said that State Grid hopes to deepen cooperation with Germany and sincerely hopes that the German government will continue to create a fair and open investment climate for Chinese enterprises, promote China-Germany cooperation in the power industry, and make joint efforts in promoting energy transition.
